Mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, to reason and solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and patterns in both number and their everyday lives.

Our aims are for children to:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Reason mathematically
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems.
  • To understand the importance of mathematics in everyday life

Broad Guidelines:

  • Work is planned against the Mathematics programmes of Study for Key Stages 1 and 2 (Sept 2013) and the Early
    Years Development Matters document
  • The Mathematics curriculum is organised separately for each year group with mathematical strands spread across the 6 terms in our medium term plans- these plans are flexible, and will be altered according to the needs of the cohort
  • Other areas of the curriculum are also include mathematical activities, making cross curricular links with our ‘Lines of Enquiry’
  • Our calculation policy has been developed to place a high emphasis on the use of practical resources for both teaching and learning
  • Teaching is based around a phased plan approach from year 1 to Year 6


  • Children’s work is marked in accordance with the agreed school feedback policy
  • At the beginning of a unit of work, children complete a short pre assessment task. This enables teachers to plan effectively for the different levels of understanding.
  • Gap Busting tasks are planned over the unit to support identified children who need extra support outside the maths lesson or in intervention groups.
  • A Post assessment task is completed at the end of the unit- this provides assessment information for teachers
